Poly(vinyl alcohol) is completely water
soluble and thus is used as a thickener in some suspensions and
emulsions. Although usually amorphous, it can be drawn into a
semicrystalline fiber. However,
the melting point of the crystallites is above the thermal degradation
temperature.
